I am a proud third generation potter. My grandmother, Dorothy Kindell was a prolific potter in the 1940's and 50's, known for her tiki culture ceramics that are still sought after today. Dorothy passed on her craft to my mother, June Kindell Applegate who taught to throw pottery almost fifty years ago.
My family and I traveled extensively and I have lived around the world. From Arizona to Georgia, and Guam to Germany, My parents and I appreciated and collected art wherever we went.
My father owned gas stations and as a boy I became adept at fixing machines from cars to heavy equipment. My first career was an obvious choice, as an auto and marine mechanic. I then became a teacher and for my next act, taught Biology, Math and Computers for thirty years. While teaching I returned to pottery as a hobby and now that am retired I have taken it on as my full-time retirement "career".
Functional pottery is my specialty. I love creating simple, elegant pieces for use in the kitchen or on the table. In addition to being able to purchase my work online, Pottery By Kent is available at the Blue Cicada Studio in Peachtree City, Georgia and you can find me nearer to my North Georgia home, at the Senoia Farmers Market.
The chop or stamp used to sign my pottery is a paw print in an apple. The apple is from Applegate and the paw is from Ludwig (Ludi for short) the pottery cat who used to jump on my lap while I was throwing pots. Ludi is no longer stalking the studio and is sorely missed by myself and my wife, Wendy.
I love being able to combine what I have enjoyed in art and my travels into my pottery. I will always continue to study and appreciate the philosophy of art.
