Steve Boykin has always had an interest in art but his father encouraged him to pursue a more financially stable education. He ended up becoming a substance abuse counselor, ending his career as director of a residential substance abuse treatment center for teenagers.
After his retirement a friend talked him into taking a "paint along" class with the famous Milton Lenoir. The hook was set.
Steve started painting landscapes and still lifes but was given the opportunity to paing with the international portrait painter Mary Carole Larson. The love for painting faces was born --- he had found his place.
His painting reflect the beauty and innocence of youth as well as the wonderful stories told in the faces of the elderly.
When asked why he paints he replied, "I paint but I can not NOT paint."
He paints with oils because it gives him the working time he needs. Each of his faces have 4 to 6 layers with each layer getting him closer to the desired look. Unfortunately each coat of paint requires days to dry before the next coat can be applied, so the process can be quite lengthy.
His work has been juried into exhibits and shows around the country. One of the things that collectors like about Steve's paintings is the each is painted only once. Regardless of its popularity it will never be duplicated.
Steve also does commissions.
