Guanyu Shi studied at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in southern China in the 1960s. He studied woodcut as well as other art forms such as oil, watercolor, and Chinese ink brush.
Raised in Shanghai, where the Huangpu River runs by the metropolitan city, Guanyu cultivated a keen interest in water, ships, and boats. Lively sketches, smooth lines with pizzazz, and vibrant colors are all manifested throughout Guanyu’s works. He broke through the conventional techniques of the Chinese ink brush painting and formed his own style.
Guanyu’s watercolor pieces demonstrate his smooth and incisive brush strokes, revealing the vivacity of his subjects. He adapted the characteristics of woodcut into his oil paintings using strong contrast of lines and colors, concise and lucid, which convey a sense of exhilaration to the audience.
Chinese calligraphy is also Guanyu’s forté. He has participated in impromptu calligraphy performances at various events in China.
Guanyu’s work has been shown in various exhibitions and publications from China throughout the years. His Chinese ink brush titled Plain Sailing was collected by People’s Daily, a prominent national publication. Guanyu’s other works in oil, watercolor, woodcut, and Chinese ink brush were collected by various art establishments, companies, and individuals.
Guanyu has conducted demonstrations for fellow artists at the Newnan Artists Association and Fayette Fine Arts Society.
Guanyu and his wife, Meihua, a fellow artist, have participated in the Old Courthouse Art Show in Fayetteville, GA, and were awarded top places multiple times for their artistry. They both have works at Dogwood Gallery in Tyrone, GA.
