Dayna Miles - fine beadwork artist
I began designing and creating beaded jewelry over 15 years ago and I am completely self-taught. Since childhood, I have enjoyed the needle arts and I have always had a love for creating jewelry. About 12 years ago, I discovered bead embroidery and weaving and it has become my passion…expressing both my love of beaded jewelry and the needle and thread.
I scour bead stores, antique markets, estate sales and even the beach, looking for unique focal pieces to use in my designs. In all of my art endeavors, balancing color and texture and symmetry of design has been my greatest enjoyment. With my jewelry designs, I’m able to express this love by using the dazzling stones, gems and pearls that nature has provided and complimenting them with beautiful embroidered seed beads and other components. When I begin one of my designs, I choose my focal piece and then begin pulling beads that would possibly work in the design just as painter decides his paint colors. That is why I refer to bead embroidery as “painting with beads!” I then let the beads and components guide me as the piece develops into a finished work of bead art.
So often when someone watches me create a piece of beadwork art with hundreds of tiny seed beads, I hear the comment “how do you have the patience to work with such fine detail?” What they don’t understand is that my art is a therapeutic and meditative process that gives me patience for other aspects of my life. It allows me to lose myself in a process where I become someone else besides mother, wife, daughter, sister or whatever other hat the day requires me to wear…..my identity as an individual is not lost.
